Characterisation testing

The type of testing that is required to characterise waste depends upon where the waste originates from and what contaminants are expected. Testing often involves metals, inorganics and organics (TPH, PAHs and phenols etc). Once the waste has been tested, the results can be used to determine whether it is hazardous or non-hazardous. We can offer general characterisation suites or waste specific suites.

Non-hazardous waste testing

Once the waste has been characterised as non-hazardous, there are two main options if going to landfill. The first is to send it directly to landfill (after reducing and recycling as much as possible) but make sure the testing used for the characterisation satisfies the landfill’s requirement otherwise more testing may be required. The second is to send it to an inert landfill in which case the waste must meet the Inert WAC levels and more testing is required.

Hazardous waste testing

If the waste has been characterised as hazardous it must be treated and tested to meet either the hazardous WAC levels or the stable non-reactive hazardous WAC levels so that it may go to the appropriate landfill.
